Letters and Architecture
Why letters and architecture?
The letters CENTRAAL STATION on the new train station in Rotterdam, the M on a residential skyscraper in Rotterdam and the south facade of the FIRST office building across Central Station in Rotterdam. Who designed the letters? Who commissioned the letters? What kind of letters are used? What is the relation between the letters and the architecture?
With this website I want to explore letters in modern Dutch architecture within their theoretical and cultural contexts. This, to make an inventory of letters that are inextricably linked with architectural projects. By showing these in this website I hope that architects will be more inclined to use the specific knowledge of the letter designers and on the other hand, that young letter designers see more opportunities to apply their expertise in architecture.
Where can we find modern examples of integrated lettering, sign and architecture?
What is their context?
What can we learn for future collaboration between architects and letter designers?
